Itinerary Day By Day
Day 1: Arrive in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha for dinner, staying for overnight at the hotel
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Tour
After breakfast in Arusha drive towards the Ngorongoro area. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers an area of 8300 sq. km, with a deep volcanic crater at its center, the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is undeniably the ‘ornament in the crown’ – an area that is about 300 sq. km in area, 600 meters deep, and 20 km wide. The rim of the crater is an astonishing 2286 meters above sea level. The floor contains a small soda lake called Lake Magadi and it is estimated that around 30000 animals live in the crater, making it the most concentrated safari wildlife viewing area on earth. Ascend to the Ngorongoro crater rim for dinner and overnight at Simba campsite.
Day 3: Nainokanoka Village
On this day you will start the Ngorongoro crater highlands trek. After breakfast departs with picnic lunch boxes (50km from the Simba Campsite, we will have enough time to visit the Olmoti Crater and view the Munge River waterfalls and the crater. The crater is the source of Munge River which drains its water into the Ngorongoro Crater, and is the 45-60 minute walk from the start point; dinner, and overnight at Bulati campsite.
Day 4: Bulati Campsite – Empakai Crater
After leaving Bulati Campsite you walk through Bulati Village and up the Bulati Ranges to reach Empakai Crater at around midday. You follow the crater rim, viewing Kerimasi Mountain and Oldonyo Lengai in a distance. In the afternoon you reach your campsite, perched high above Empakai Crater. The surrounding thicket is home to buffaloes and hyenas. After pitching your tent and taking a cup of tea you will descend the forested crater slopes to reach the crater floor, the majority of which is covered by a salt lake. Lots of water birds and flamingos can be seen as they migrate between the crater lakes of Ngorongoro and Lake Natron. It is also a joy to walk around the lakeshore. Overnight at one of the campsites at the Crater Rim at an altitude of some 3200 m).
Day 5: Empakai Crater Rim
From Empakai your trail leads you around Empakai Crater Rim with great views towards the Crater Bottom and Lake. The surrounding forest is inhabited by buffalos and porcupines. Around midday, you reach Naiyobi village, a picturesque Maasai Village at the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation area, where you will bid farewell to your armed ranger. Together with your Maasai Guide, you will proceed to the Acacia Forest behind Naiyobi Village overnight.
Day 6: Nayobi-Lake Natron
The last part of your trek is a longer hike down towards the edge of the Rift Valley Escarpment. You hike along with volcanic landscapes formed by the latest eruption of Oldoinyo Lengai in 2008/9 until you reach Pembe ya Swala, a noticeable landmark that leads you on a steep descent down to the plains surrounding Lake Natron. Your safari vehicle will be waiting for you to transfer to Lake Natron base camp for a shower and relaxing after long treks, dinner, and overnight.
Day 7: Lake Natron
After breakfast you have a full day to explore the area hike to a waterfall in a deep gorge, visit a Maasai village, etc. If you are up to the challenge and a very strenuous climb, you can opt for a climb to Lengai volcano (ca. 150-200 USD p.p.) dinner and overnight at Mikuyu campsite.
Day 8: Back to Arusha
After breakfast stay at leisure then transfer to Arusha arrive at the Hotel for dinner and overnight
