Arusha National Park covers 552 sq. km (212 sq. miles), and is the closest National Park to and from Arusha city; “the hub of Tourism and Northern Tanzania safari capital”. This closeness to the town makes it the popular day trip destination for many visitors entering Arusha city and locals alike. The park is regarded as the gem of varied ecosystems and spectacular views.
Arusha national park contains the grades, peak, and ash cone of Mt. Meru (4566 meters above the sea level); Ngurdoto Crater, the Momela Lakes, and the lush hill forests that cover its lower slopes. Game viewing around the Momela Lakes is the most spectacular, laid-back and quiet pace. Many visitors going through the forest will find themselves stopping to catch a glimpse of rare colobus monkeys; hanging on tree branches and playing in the canopy.
Arusha national park is the only place where you may see the black and white colobus monkeys openly. The park hosts a considerable number of Buffalos and warthogs; among other wild animals including zebras, giraffes, bus backs, red forest duikers and, vervet monkeys. Elephants and Lions are not common in the park, but visitors might be graced by the glimpse of leopard and spotted hyenas; during the early mornings and the late evenings.
Birdlife which includes the majority of waterfowls; among others around the series of water bodies found in the park is abundant and exciting
Visitors also prefer the three-day mount Meru trek. Mount Meru is noted to be the challenging trekking; as an alternative to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro peak. Besides the lower slopes, the paths to rivers and waterfalls make a relaxing day hike for visitors who don’t want to attempt the rather strenuous trek.
Ancient fig tree forests, crystal clear waters pouring from mountain streams, the Mount Kilimanjaro view; and a chance to spot colobus monkeys are the pleasures of Arusha National Park.
